Together with prisoners’ rights advocates, these women help viewers answer a deceptively simple question: What would you have needed to avoid incarceration?

Nanaimo Global Film Festival: Gay Chorus: Deep South
In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-2SLGBTQ+ laws in Southern US states and the divisive 2016 election, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarked on a tour of the American Deep South bringing a message of music, love, and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance.

Film: Sadika’s Garden
The story of Sadika, her family, and their move to Vancouver from Syria’s war-torn Raqqa. A group
of Canadians, once refugees themselves, unite to sponsor a Syrian refugee family in this moving short film. Followed by a facilitated discussion.

Graphic Refugees: The Trauma of the Displaced Self Arts and Humanities Colloquium Series
When the experience of being a refugee is utterly foreign to us, how can a comic artist bring the lived turmoil of war and loss to us in a way that invites empathy? Graphic narratives of displacement bring us face to face with the suffering of others, but also expose the limits of our compassion and challenge us to move from seeing to acting.
